Searching for Meteorites in Antarctica

June 15, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

ONLINE: The Bay Area chapter of the [Houston Sierra Club](https://www.sierraclub.org/texas/houston) will present a talk by **Cindy Evans, Ph.D.,** the ARES Lead Exploration Scientist at NASA, who will discuss deep field operations in Antarctica, all of the pieces that need to come together to conduct meteorite research and sample collection in Antarctica, and the significance of collecting those samples for understanding solar system evolution.

The mission of Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Division, or **ARES**, is to combine scientific and engineering expertise in order to advance human space exploration, to integrate terrestrial and planetary research, and to promote successful space missions by mitigating risk. Our people are the world’s leading sample scientists and we curate the most extensive collection of extraterrestrial materials on Earth.

**Cynthia Evans** is a practicing field scientist and has participated in several oceanographic expeditions, desert research and technology studies (Desert RATS), and was a member of two Antarctic Search for Meteorites field deployments (2015-16 and 2019-20). Evans has studied the geochemistry of ocean crusts; trained crews in Earth science and performed Earth Observations from the International Space Station (ISS) and Space Shuttle, also serving as an Associate ISS Program Scientist for Earth Observations; led the Image Science & Analysis Group during the Return-to-Flight missions; and served as the Astromaterials Curation Office Manager and the Division Chief of the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Division at the Johnson Space Center (JSC). She is ARES Senior Exploration Scientist, helping enable planetary exploration and future human missions to the Moon.
