Pint-Sized Science: Science & Applications of Remote Sensing Hazard Analysis

April 16 @ 6:30 pm8:30 pm

Scientists are using data from remote sensing tools, such as satellites and drones, to analyze disaster dynamics in relation to things like floods, earthquakes, industrial accidents, and wildfires. This data helps them assess risks, monitor changes, and devise response plans effectively. This data-driven approach facilitates a comprehensive understanding of disasters and enhances preparedness and mitigation strategies.

Dr. Pietro Milillo, Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Houston and NASA STV Applications Lead

Dr. Milillo will be presenting on how in our increasingly interconnected world, the ability to monitor, predict, and mitigate natural and human-induced hazards is of paramount importance. Remote sensing, with its arsenal of cutting-edge technologies and methodologies, plays a pivotal role in this endeavor. By gathering data from satellites, aircraft, drones, and ground-based sensors, remote sensing enables us to gain invaluable insights into the dynamics of hazards spanning from earthquakes and floods to wildfires and industrial accidents. Throughout this session, we will embark on a journey through the science and applications of remote sensing in hazard analysis. We’ll explore how remote sensing techniques, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR), LiDAR, and multispectral and hyperspectral imaging, empower us to assess risks, monitor changes, and develop robust strategies for disaster preparedness and response. From detecting precursory signals to assessing post-event impacts, remote sensing offers a multifaceted toolkit for understanding the complexities of hazards and their interactions with the environment.

**North Shepherd Brewing** and Adam Fetterman, University of Houston Associate Professor of psychology and director, Personality, Emotion, and Social Cognition lab have partnered to bring you “Pint-Sized Science” on Tuesdays in the taproom. The goal is to present broad areas of science to the public in a fun and accessible way
