How To Start A Volunteer Program

January 18, 2023 @ 9:00 am10:00 am

Making The Case For Investing In Our Volunteers

Over time managers, CEO’s, and board members may change, but the work and service that volunteers provide can be a constant for your organization when you have the right resources. This workshop will give each participant a chance to build their own case, specific to their own organization, for requesting more resources for their volunteer engagement efforts. We’ll discuss how the SEE Framework (Supportive Environments for Effectiveness), when implemented properly, will set the stage for your volunteer base to grow exponentially.

Brooke Campbell, CNP, is the Director of Volunteer Houston, a wife, an AmeriCorps NCCC alum, rescue kitten mom, backyard gardener, educator, international traveler, INTJ (information architect), and Certified Nonprofit Professional. Brooke’s passion for volunteering began as a young girl when she accompanied her parents on a trip to deliver a home-baked casserole to a man living in a small, hand-crafted shed deep in the woods of East Texas. The passion that was sparked that day has developed into a fulfilling career as a nonprofit leader. Brooke is a strong believer in the mutual benefits of collaborations and serves on the Power Tools for Nonprofits Advisory Committee and the 2023 Texas Nonprofit Summit Advisory Committee alongside several fellow nonprofit leaders.

SERVICE LEARNING | As the “Service Learning Initiator” for her AmeriCorps NCCC team, she has since focused her efforts on creating the space for intentional service learning reflections among program participants, and staff members, in each of her professional roles. She facilitates the Intentional Service Learning workshop designed for nonprofit leaders in a variety of roles. The workshop legitimizes a non-academic approach to service learning.

DISASTER PREPAREDNESS & RESPONSE | Brooke currently serves on the Harris County Long-Term Recovery Committee Steering Committee, as the Co-Chair of the Volunteer Management Workgroup, on the Points of Light Affiliate Disaster Committee, and on the executive committee of the Texas Gulf Coast Regional VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Assisting in Disaster). She dreams of a time in the not-so-distant future when the people in the Gulf Coast Region understand, accept, and seek out a central web-based portal for disaster-related volunteer opportunities thereby increasing the efficiency in which survivors receive the support they need.

VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT | Brooke is trained in instructional design and evaluation. She has written two professional training courses – including the curriculum, facilitator guides, learner workbooks, and presentation slides – that have been presented to hundreds of Boy Scouts of America professionals. She has also been trained as a Points of Light Volunteer Engagement Training Program facilitator which she offers to volunteer engagement professionals in the Gulf Coast Region every year in the Spring.
