Cracking the Secondary DNA Codes That Control Access to the Primary Genetic Code

October 27, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

HYBRID: The [Gulf Coast Consortia](https://www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/) presents a [Keck Seminar](https://www.gulfcoastconsortia.org/home/training/keck-seminar/) featuring [Lynn Zechiedrich](https://www.bcm.edu/research/faculty-labs/lynn-zechiedrich-lab), PhD, Professor, Dept. of Molecular Virology and Microbiology,

Established in August 1997, the Zechiedrich laboratory at Baylor College of Medicine is located in the [Texas Medical Center](https://www.tmc.edu/about-tmc/), the largest medical center in the world, in Houston, Texas, USA. The work in the laboratory centers around DNA structure/function and the essential enzymes that modulate DNA structure/function, the DNA topoisomerases. Human topoisomerases are the targets of several classes of anti-cancer drugs while bacterial topoisomerases are targeted by fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Because the essential topoisomerases modulate DNA, the work in the laboratory has broadened to include creating tiny circles of DNA to study DNA supercoiling and how it affects topoisomerases and how drugs inhibit topoisomerases. These supercoiled DNA nanoparticles have important materials science applications, including as non-viral gene therapy delivery vectors.

The talk will be held in Room 280 of the BioScience Research Collaborative (BRC), 6500 Main Street.

Details on how to connect via Zoom to come.

Reception to follow.

NOTE: This will be a NON-HOSTED Meetup.
